Amoxicillin is one of the most commonly prescribed antibiotics for pediatric infections, including ear infections, strep throat, and pneumonia. Unlike adult medication, which often comes in standard doses, pediatric Amoxil is calculated based on the child's weight to ensure safety and efficacy.
To use this calculator, you will need three pieces of information:
- The Child's Weight: Precise weight is critical. One kilogram is equal to 2.2 pounds.
- Concentration: Liquid amoxicillin (suspension) comes in different strengths, usually expressed as milligrams per 5 milliliters (e.g., 250mg/5mL).
- The Dosage Regimen: Doctors prescribe a specific amount of milligrams per kilogram per day (mg/kg/day), depending on the severity and type of infection.
Typical Dosage Examples
For most mild to moderate infections, a dosage of 20 to 40 mg/kg/day is standard. However, for acute otitis media (middle ear infections), clinical guidelines often recommend a "high-dose" therapy of 80 to 90 mg/kg/day to overcome resistant bacteria.
The Math Behind the Calculator
If a child weighs 10kg and is prescribed 40mg/kg/day divided into two doses using 250mg/5mL concentration:
- Total Daily mg: 10kg × 40mg = 400mg per day.
- mg per Dose: 400mg / 2 doses = 200mg per dose.
- mL per Dose: (200mg / 250mg) × 5mL = 4mL per dose.
Important Administration Tips
Always shake the liquid suspension well before measuring. Use the oral syringe or dosing cup provided by the pharmacist rather than a household kitchen spoon, which is inaccurate. If a dose is missed, administer it as soon as remembered unless it is almost time for the next dose; do not double the dose.
