How Modern Pentathlon Scoring Works

The Modern Pentathlon is a unique multi-discipline sport created by the founder of the modern Olympics, Pierre de Coubertin. To determine the winner, athletes compete in five events, and their performance is converted into a point system. The final event (Laser Run) is held as a pursuit race where athletes start in order of their cumulative points from the previous three events.

1. Fencing (Epee)

Athletes compete in a round-robin tournament of one-minute bouts. In a standard field of 36 athletes, a total of 35 bouts are fought. Winning 70% of these bouts (25 wins) earns 250 points. Every victory above or below this 70% mark adds or subtracts a specific number of points (usually 7 points in a 36-athlete field).

2. Swimming (200m Freestyle)

The benchmark time for 250 points is 2 minutes and 30 seconds. Because speed is critical, every 0.50 seconds faster than this time adds 1 point to the score. Conversely, every 0.50 seconds slower subtracts 1 point.

3. Equestrian Riding (Show Jumping)

Athletes are assigned an unfamiliar horse via lottery just 20 minutes before competing. A clear round within the time limit yields a perfect score of 300 points. Points are deducted for knocked-down rails (7 pts), refusals (10 pts), falls (elimination/0 pts), and exceeding the time allowed (1 pt per second).

4. Laser Run (Combined Event)

This is the final event, consisting of four rounds of laser pistol shooting (hitting 5 targets) followed by an 800m run (3200m total). The base score is 500 points for a time of 13 minutes and 20 seconds. Every 1 second faster or slower equals 1 point.

Calculation Example

If an athlete performs as follows:

  • Fencing: 22 wins in a 36-man field = 229 Points (3 wins below 70%)
  • Swimming: 2:10.00 = 290 Points (20 seconds/40 half-seconds faster than 2:30)
  • Riding: One rail down = 293 Points (300 – 7)
  • Laser Run: 12:00.00 = 580 Points (80 seconds faster than 13:20)
  • Total Score: 1,392 Points

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the "Bonus Round" in fencing?
After the ranking round, a bonus round is held where athletes compete in a ladder-style elimination. Each victory in the bonus round adds 1 point (or 2 for the final bout) to the total score.
How does the Laser Run start?
The leader from the first three events starts first. The remaining athletes start after a delay based on their point difference: 1 point equals a 1-second delay. The first person to cross the finish line wins the entire competition.
