The Calculation Explained
The calculator performs the following steps:
Calculate Room Perimeter: It first determines the total length of all walls by adding the room's length and width, then multiplying by two: Perimeter = 2 * (Room Length + Room Width).
Calculate Gross Wall Area: This is the total area of the walls if there were no openings. It's found by multiplying the perimeter by the wall height: Gross Wall Area = Perimeter * Wall Height.
Calculate Total Window Area: The area of all windows is determined by multiplying the number of windows by their average length and height: Total Window Area = Number of Windows * Window Length * Window Height.
Calculate Total Door Area: Similarly, the area of all doors is calculated: Total Door Area = Number of Doors * Door Length * Door Height.
Calculate Total Opening Area: The sum of the total window area and total door area gives you the total area that won't need material: Total Opening Area = Total Window Area + Total Door Area.
Calculate Net Wall Area: Finally, the net wall area, which is the surface you'll actually cover, is found by subtracting the total opening area from the gross wall area: Net Wall Area = Gross Wall Area - Total Opening Area. If this results in a negative number (e.g., a room made entirely of windows), it defaults to 0.

Let's say you have a room with the following dimensions:
