Understanding Bra Size: More Than Just Numbers and Letters

Finding the right bra size is crucial for comfort, support, and overall breast health. A well-fitting bra can enhance your posture, alleviate back and shoulder pain, and improve the appearance of your clothing. Conversely, an ill-fitting bra can lead to discomfort, skin irritation, poor posture, and even long-term issues.

How to Measure Your Bra Size Correctly

To get the most accurate results from our calculator, follow these steps carefully. You'll need a soft measuring tape and ideally, a non-padded bra or no bra at all.

Step 1: Measure Your Underbust (Band Size)

  1. Stand upright and exhale completely to get the smallest measurement.
  2. Wrap the measuring tape snugly around your rib cage, directly under your bust. Ensure the tape is level all the way around your back.
  3. Read the measurement in inches or centimeters. This is your underbust measurement.
  4. Example: If you measure 30.5 inches, enter "30.5". If you measure 77 cm, enter "77" and select "Centimeters".

Step 2: Measure Your Bust (Cup Size)

  1. Stand upright and wrap the measuring tape around the fullest part of your bust. This is usually across your nipples.
  2. Ensure the tape is level and not too tight or too loose. It should rest gently on your skin without compressing your breasts.
  3. Read the measurement in inches or centimeters. This is your bust measurement.
  4. Example: If you measure 36 inches, enter "36". If you measure 91 cm, enter "91" and select "Centimeters".

Understanding Your Bra Size Calculation

Bra sizing involves two main components: the band size and the cup size.

  • Band Size: This number (e.g., 32, 34, 36) corresponds to the measurement around your rib cage. Our calculator rounds your underbust measurement to the nearest even number to determine your band size, as most bra bands are sold in even increments.
  • Cup Size: This letter (e.g., A, B, C) is determined by the difference between your fullest bust measurement and your calculated band size. Each inch of difference typically corresponds to a different cup letter.

Tips for Finding the Perfect Fit

  • Always Try On: Our calculator provides an excellent starting point, but bra sizes can vary significantly between brands and styles. Always try on bras before purchasing.
  • Check the Band: The band provides about 80% of the bra's support. It should be snug and level across your back, not riding up. You should be able to fit two fingers comfortably under the band.
  • Check the Cups: Your breasts should fill the cups without gaping or spilling over the top or sides. The center gore (the part between the cups) should lie flat against your sternum.
  • Check the Straps: Straps should provide minimal support; they are mainly there to keep the cups in place. If your straps are digging in, your band might be too loose.
  • Scoop and Swoop: When trying on a bra, lean forward and "scoop" all your breast tissue from under your arms and sides into the cups, then "swoop" it up.
  • Re-measure Regularly: Your body changes over time due to weight fluctuations, hormonal shifts, and age. Re-measure yourself every 6-12 months.

Common Bra Fitting Issues

  • Band Riding Up: The band is too loose. Try a smaller band size.
  • Cups Gaping: The cups are too big. Try a smaller cup size, or a different style.
  • Spillage (Quad Boob): The cups are too small. Try a larger cup size.
  • Straps Digging In: The band is not providing enough support, putting too much strain on the straps. Try a smaller band size and potentially a larger cup size.
  • Center Gore Not Lying Flat: The cups are too small or the style isn't right for your breast shape. Try a larger cup size or a different bra style.
