Understanding the Bazi Day Pillar

Bazi (八字), also known as the Four Pillars of Destiny, is a sophisticated system of Chinese astrology that uses your birth date and time to create a unique chart. This chart is composed of four "pillars," each representing a different aspect of your life: the Year, Month, Day, and Hour of your birth.

Among these, the Day Pillar (日柱, Rì Zhù) is considered the most important. It represents your fundamental self, your core identity, and your inner nature. The Heavenly Stem of the Day Pillar is known as the Day Master (日主, Rì Zhǔ), and it is the focal point of any Bazi reading.

Components of a Pillar

Each pillar consists of two characters:

  • Heavenly Stem (天干, Tiān Gān): There are 10 Heavenly Stems, which represent the external, more apparent qualities of a person. They are associated with the five elements (Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal, Water) in their Yin and Yang forms.
  • Earthly Branch (地支, Dì Zhī): There are 12 Earthly Branches, which correspond to the Chinese zodiac animals. They represent the internal, foundational energies and influences in your life. The Day Pillar's Earthly Branch is also known as the "Spouse Palace," offering insights into your marriage and relationships.

How to Use the Calculator

Simply enter your Gregorian birth date (the standard calendar system) into the fields above. The calculator will perform the complex astronomical conversion to find the specific Heavenly Stem and Earthly Branch that governed the day you were born.

Example Calculation

Let's take the famous physicist Albert Einstein, who was born on March 14, 1879.

  • Input: Year=1879, Month=3, Day=14
  • Result: Wu Wu (戊午)

This result tells us that his Day Master is Wu (戊), which is Yang Earth. His Day Branch is Wu (午), which is associated with the Horse and the element of Fire. In Bazi analysis, this combination of a strong, stable Earth element sitting on a foundation of passionate Fire suggests a personality that is both grounded and intensely driven—a fitting description for a revolutionary thinker.

What is a Day Master?

Your Day Master is the Heavenly Stem of your Day Pillar. It is the single most important reference point in your entire Bazi chart. Understanding the nature of your Day Master—whether it's Jia Wood, Bing Fire, Geng Metal, or one of the other seven stems—is the first step in unlocking the wealth of information your Bazi chart holds about your character, talents, challenges, and life path.
