Understanding Lab Grown Diamond Pricing

Lab-grown diamonds, also known as cultivated, engineered, or synthetic diamonds, are real diamonds created in a laboratory setting rather than extracted from the earth. Chemically, physically, and optically, they are identical to natural diamonds. Their pricing, however, differs significantly, primarily due to their controlled supply and production methods.

The 4 Cs of Lab Grown Diamonds

Just like natural diamonds, the price of a lab-grown diamond is primarily determined by the "4 Cs": Carat, Color, Clarity, and Cut.

1. Carat Weight

Carat refers to the diamond's weight, not its size. It's the most significant factor influencing price. As carat weight increases, the price doesn't just go up proportionally; it increases exponentially. Larger diamonds are rarer, even in a lab setting, making them more valuable per carat. Our calculator uses a base price per carat that adjusts upwards for larger stones.

Example: A 1.00 carat lab-grown diamond might cost $2,200, while a 2.00 carat diamond of similar quality could be around $5,500, not simply $4,400 (2 x $2,200), reflecting the higher price per carat for larger stones.

2. Color Grade

Diamond color is graded on a scale from D (colorless) to Z (light yellow or brown). The less color a diamond has, the rarer and more valuable it is. Lab-grown diamonds are often available in excellent color grades (D-G) at more accessible price points than their natural counterparts. Our calculator applies a percentage adjustment based on the selected color grade, with D being the most expensive and J being the least.

Example: A 1.00 carat G color diamond might be $2,200. A D color diamond of the same carat, clarity, and cut could be approximately $2,600, while an I color diamond might be around $1,900.

3. Clarity Grade

Clarity refers to the absence of inclusions (internal flaws) and blemishes (external flaws). Grades range from Flawless (FL) to Included (I3). Most lab-grown diamonds fall into the VS (Very Slightly Included) or SI (Slightly Included) categories, offering excellent value. Higher clarity grades command higher prices due to their rarity and visual perfection.

Example: For a 1.00 carat G color, Excellent cut, Round diamond, a VS2 clarity stone might be $2,200. An FL/IF clarity stone could be around $2,800, whereas an SI1 clarity stone might be $1,900.

4. Cut Grade

The cut of a diamond refers to how well its facets interact with light, determining its brilliance, fire, and sparkle. It's often considered the most important of the 4 Cs for a diamond's beauty. Grades typically range from Excellent to Poor. An excellent cut maximizes a diamond's light performance and therefore its value. Our calculator reflects this by applying a discount for lower cut grades.

Example: A 1.00 carat G color, VS2 clarity, Round diamond with an Excellent cut might be $2,200. The same diamond with a Very Good cut could be around $2,046, and with a Good cut, approximately $1,870.

Diamond Shape

While not one of the traditional "4 Cs," the diamond's shape significantly impacts its price. Round brilliant diamonds are the most popular and generally the most expensive per carat due to higher demand and the amount of rough diamond lost during cutting. Fancy shapes (like oval, princess, emerald, cushion, pear, marquise, asscher, heart) are typically less expensive per carat.

Example: A 1.00 carat G color, VS2 clarity, Excellent cut Round diamond might be $2,200. A similar quality Oval or Princess cut diamond could be around $1,800, while a Marquise or Pear cut might be closer to $1,650.

How to Use the Calculator

Simply select your desired characteristics for Carat Weight, Color Grade, Clarity Grade, Cut Grade, and Diamond Shape from the dropdown menus. Click "Calculate Estimated Price" to see an approximate value for your lab-grown diamond.

Important Considerations

  • Market Fluctuations: Lab-grown diamond prices are dynamic and can change based on supply, demand, and technological advancements.
  • Retailer Markup: Different retailers will have varying markups, affecting the final price.
  • Certification: Diamonds certified by reputable labs like IGI, GIA, or GCAL often command slightly higher prices due to verified quality.
  • Other Factors: Additional characteristics like polish, symmetry, fluorescence, and girdle thickness can also subtly influence price.

This calculator provides a general estimate to help you understand the pricing structure of lab-grown diamonds. For an exact price, always consult with a reputable jeweler.
