Understanding A1C and eAG
The A1C test, also known as the hemoglobin A1C or HbA1c test, is a common blood test used to diagnose type 1 and type 2 diabetes and to monitor how well you're managing your diabetes. It measures your average blood sugar levels over the past two to three months.
Unlike daily blood sugar checks, which give you a snapshot of your glucose levels at a specific moment, the A1C test provides a broader picture of your blood sugar control. It does this by measuring the percentage of hemoglobin (a protein in red blood cells) that is coated with sugar (glycated).
What is eAG?
Estimated Average Glucose (eAG) is a term used to translate your A1C test result into a unit that is more familiar to people who regularly monitor their blood sugar: mg/dL (milligrams per deciliter) or mmol/L (millimoles per liter). This conversion helps individuals understand their A1C result in terms of an average daily blood glucose level, making it easier to relate to their home blood glucose meter readings.
Why is this conversion important?
For many people, seeing their A1C as an average blood glucose number can be more intuitive and actionable. For example, an A1C of 7% might not immediately convey a clear picture of daily blood sugar, but knowing it corresponds to an eAG of approximately 154 mg/dL (or 8.6 mmol/L) can help individuals understand the implications for their daily management and dietary choices.
Interpreting Your Results
Here's a general guide to A1C and eAG levels, though individual targets may vary based on age, health conditions, and other factors. Always consult with your healthcare provider for personalized advice.
- Normal A1C: Below 5.7% (eAG below 117 mg/dL or 6.5 mmol/L)
- Pre-diabetes: 5.7% to 6.4% (eAG 117-137 mg/dL or 6.5-7.6 mmol/L)
- Diabetes: 6.5% or higher (eAG 140 mg/dL or 7.8 mmol/L and above)
For most adults with diabetes, the American Diabetes Association (ADA) recommends an A1C target of less than 7%. However, your personal target might be higher or lower.
How to Use the Calculator
- A1C to eAG: Enter your A1C percentage in the first section and click "Calculate eAG" to see your estimated average glucose in both mg/dL and mmol/L.
- eAG (mg/dL) to A1C: If you know your average blood glucose in mg/dL, enter it in the second section and click "Calculate A1C" to find your estimated A1C percentage.
- eAG (mmol/L) to A1C: If you know your average blood glucose in mmol/L, enter it in the third section and click "Calculate A1C" to find your estimated A1C percentage.
