Georgia Diminished Value Calculator
Use this calculator to estimate the diminished value of your vehicle after an accident in Georgia, based on a commonly referenced formula. This tool provides an estimate and is not a substitute for a professional appraisal.

Understanding Diminished Value in Georgia
When your vehicle is involved in an accident, even if it's perfectly repaired, its market value can decrease simply because it now has an accident history. This loss in value is known as "diminished value." In Georgia, unlike some other states, you have a legal right to claim diminished value from the at-fault party's insurance company.
What is Diminished Value?
Diminished value is the difference between your vehicle's market value immediately before an accident and its market value immediately after being repaired. Even with high-quality repairs, a vehicle with an accident history is often perceived as less desirable and may fetch a lower price than an identical vehicle with a clean history.
The Georgia 17c Formula (Simplified)
While there's no single "official" formula, insurance companies and appraisers in Georgia often use a method derived from a legal case (Mabry v. State Farm) and commonly referred to as the "17c Formula" or a similar calculation. This formula typically involves three main components:
- 10% Cap on Pre-Accident Value: The calculation often starts by taking 10% of your vehicle's pre-accident fair market value. This acts as an initial cap on the potential diminished value before other factors are considered. For example, if your car was worth $25,000, the initial cap would be $2,500.
- Damage Multiplier: This factor adjusts the initial cap based on the severity of the damage sustained in the accident. More severe damage (e.g., structural damage, frame damage, panel replacement) leads to a higher multiplier, indicating a greater loss in value. Minor damage (e.g., paint scratches only) would result in a lower multiplier.
- 0.00: No structural damage, no panel replacement, no paint work
- 0.25: Minor structural damage
- 0.50: Moderate structural damage
- 0.75: Major structural damage
- 1.00: Severe structural damage, panel replacement, paint work
- Mileage Multiplier: The vehicle's mileage at the time of the accident also plays a significant role. Newer vehicles with lower mileage generally experience a greater percentage of diminished value than older vehicles with high mileage. This is because a significant portion of a vehicle's value is lost through depreciation over time and use, making the accident's impact relatively smaller on an already depreciated, high-mileage vehicle.
- 1.00: 0-19,999 miles
- 0.80: 20,000-39,999 miles
- 0.60: 40,000-59,999 miles
- 0.40: 60,000-79,999 miles
- 0.20: 80,000-99,999 miles
- 0.00: 100,000+ miles
How the Calculator Works (Example):
Let's say your vehicle had a pre-accident market value of $25,000, sustained "Moderate Structural Damage," and had 45,000 miles at the time of the accident.
- Initial Cap: $25,000 * 10% = $2,500
- Damage Multiplier: For "Moderate Structural Damage," the multiplier is 0.50. So, $2,500 * 0.50 = $1,250
- Mileage Multiplier: For 45,000 miles, the multiplier is 0.60. So, $1,250 * 0.60 = $750
The estimated diminished value in this example would be $750.
Important Considerations:
- This is an Estimate: The calculator provides an estimate based on a common formula. Actual diminished value can vary based on many factors, including the specific vehicle, quality of repairs, market conditions, and the insurance company's policies.
- Professional Appraisal: For a more accurate assessment, especially for newer or high-value vehicles, it's often recommended to obtain a professional diminished value appraisal from an independent expert.
- Negotiation: Insurance companies may initially offer a lower amount or dispute your claim. Be prepared to negotiate and provide evidence (like an appraisal) to support your claim.
- Total Loss: If your vehicle is deemed a total loss, diminished value does not apply, as the insurer pays out the pre-accident market value of the vehicle.
This calculator is a helpful starting point for understanding potential diminished value, but always consider seeking professional advice for your specific situation.
