Key Factors Affecting EV Range:
- Battery Capacity (kWh): This is the most fundamental factor. Measured in kilowatt-hours (kWh), it represents the total energy storage of your EV's battery. A larger battery capacity generally means a longer range. For example, a 75 kWh battery stores more energy than a 50 kWh battery.
- Vehicle Efficiency (Wh/mile or Wh/km): This indicates how much energy your vehicle consumes to travel a certain distance. Measured in Watt-hours per mile (Wh/mile) or Watt-hours per kilometer (Wh/km), lower numbers mean better efficiency. For instance, an EV consuming 250 Wh/mile is more efficient than one consuming 300 Wh/mile. Factors like vehicle weight, aerodynamics, and tire type influence efficiency.
- Temperature Impact: Extreme temperatures, especially cold weather, significantly reduce EV range. Batteries are less efficient in cold conditions, and energy is also used for cabin heating, further depleting the battery.
