Example 2: Analyzing Profit Decline
A company's annual profit was $100,000 in 2020 and dropped to $80,000 in 2021.
- Initial X (Year): 2020
- Final X (Year): 2021
- Initial Y (Profit): $100,000
- Final Y (Profit): $80,000
Rate of Change = ($80,000 – $100,000) / (2021 – 2020) = -$20,000 / 1 = -$20,000 per year.
A negative rate of change indicates a decrease.
Example 3: Constant Temperature
The temperature in a room was 25°C at 1 PM and remained 25°C at 2 PM.
- Initial X (Time): 1 PM
- Final X (Time): 2 PM
- Initial Y (Temperature): 25°C
- Final Y (Temperature): 25°C
Rate of Change = (25 – 25) / (2 – 1) = 0 / 1 = 0 °C per hour.
A zero rate of change means there is no change in the dependent variable with respect to the independent variable.
