How the Calculation Works
The calculator uses a straightforward formula to determine the total tire height:
- First, it calculates the sidewall height by multiplying the tire width by the aspect ratio percentage. For example, a 205/55R16 tire has a sidewall height of 205mm * (55/100) = 112.75mm.
- Next, it doubles the sidewall height (because there's a sidewall on both the top and bottom of the wheel) and adds the wheel's diameter (converted from inches to millimeters). So, (2 * 112.75mm) + (16 inches * 25.4 mm/inch) = 225.5mm + 406.4mm = 631.9mm.
- Finally, this total diameter in millimeters is converted back to inches for a more common measurement. 631.9mm / 25.4 mm/inch = 24.88 inches.
