For individuals 5 feet (60 inches) or shorter, the base weight (50 kg for men, 45.5 kg for women) is typically used as the ideal body weight.

Example Calculation:

Let's say we have a male who is 5 feet 10 inches tall:

  • Total height in inches = (5 feet * 12 inches/foot) + 10 inches = 60 + 10 = 70 inches.
  • Inches over 5 feet = 70 – 60 = 10 inches.
  • Ideal Body Weight = 50 kg + (2.3 kg * 10 inches) = 50 kg + 23 kg = 73 kg.
  • In pounds, this would be approximately 73 kg * 2.20462 lbs/kg = 160.9 lbs.

For a female who is 5 feet 4 inches tall:

  • Total height in inches = (5 feet * 12 inches/foot) + 4 inches = 60 + 4 = 64 inches.
  • Inches over 5 feet = 64 – 60 = 4 inches.
  • Ideal Body Weight = 45.5 kg + (2.3 kg * 4 inches) = 45.5 kg + 9.2 kg = 54.7 kg.
  • In pounds, this would be approximately 54.7 kg * 2.20462 lbs/kg = 120.6 lbs.

Limitations of IBW Formulas

While useful, IBW formulas have limitations:

  • Body Composition: These formulas do not account for body composition (e.g., muscle mass vs. fat mass). A very muscular individual might weigh more than their calculated IBW but still be very healthy.
  • Body Frame: They don't consider individual body frame size (small, medium, large).
