- Verbal Scale: This expresses the scale in words, such as "One centimeter equals one kilometer." This is easy to understand but less precise for calculations.
- Graphic Scale (Bar Scale): This is a visual ruler printed on the map. You can use a physical ruler to measure a segment of the bar scale and then apply that measurement to distances on the map.

Example Calculation
