Understanding Your GI Bill Monthly Housing Allowance (MHA)
The Monthly Housing Allowance (MHA) is a crucial benefit provided to eligible veterans, service members, and their dependents under the Post-9/11 GI Bill. It helps cover the cost of living while you pursue your education or training. Unlike tuition and fees, which are often paid directly to the school, MHA is paid directly to you each month.
Who is Eligible for MHA?
MHA is primarily associated with the Post-9/11 GI Bill (Chapter 33). To be eligible, you must generally have served at least 90 aggregate days on active duty after September 10, 2001, or have been discharged with a service-connected disability after 30 days. The amount of MHA you receive depends on several factors, including your length of active duty service, which determines your overall eligibility percentage (e.g., 100%, 90%, 80%).
How is MHA Calculated?
The calculation of your MHA is not a one-size-fits-all formula. It's influenced by three primary factors:
- Training Location (ZIP Code): The VA uses the Basic Housing Allowance (BAH) rates for an E-5 with dependents in the ZIP code of your school. These rates vary significantly across the country, reflecting local cost of living. Our calculator provides example rates for different locations and an "All Online Training" option.
- Rate of Pursuit: This refers to how many credits or clock hours you are taking compared to what your school considers full-time. For example, if 12 credits is full-time, taking 9 credits means you have a 75% rate of pursuit. The VA pays MHA proportionally to your rate of pursuit, but only if your rate of pursuit is greater than 50%. If your rate of pursuit is 50% or less, you generally will not receive MHA. The VA rounds your rate of pursuit to the nearest tenth.
- GI Bill Eligibility Percentage: Based on your length of active duty service, you are assigned an eligibility percentage (e.g., 100% for 36+ months of service, 90% for 30-35 months, etc.). Your MHA is then multiplied by this percentage.
Special Considerations:
- All Online Training: If you are enrolled exclusively in online courses, your MHA is capped at 50% of the national average BAH for an E-5 with dependents. This rate is significantly lower than in-person rates.
- Active Duty Service Members: If you are still on active duty, you are not eligible to receive MHA.
- Less Than Half-Time Enrollment: If your rate of pursuit is 50% or less, you will not receive MHA.
- Kicker Programs: Some individuals may be eligible for "kickers" or additional benefits, which are not included in this basic MHA calculation.
How to Use the Calculator:
To estimate your potential Monthly Housing Allowance, simply input the following:
- Select Your Training Location: Choose the option that best represents your school's ZIP code or select "All Online Training" if applicable.
- Your Rate of Pursuit: Enter the percentage of full-time enrollment you are pursuing (e.g., 100 for full-time, 75 for three-quarter time).
- Your GI Bill Eligibility Percentage: Input your determined eligibility percentage based on your service time (e.g., 100, 90, 80).
The calculator will then provide an estimated monthly MHA amount. Remember, this is an estimate, and your actual MHA may vary based on official VA calculations and specific program details.
