Understanding American Airlines Loyalty Points
American Airlines' AAdvantage program uses Loyalty Points as the primary metric for earning elite status. Unlike redeemable miles which you use for flights, Loyalty Points are specifically designed to track your engagement with American Airlines and its partners throughout the year, determining your elite tier for the following membership year.
How Loyalty Points Are Earned
The most common way to earn Loyalty Points is by flying on American Airlines or its Oneworld partners. For flights operated by American Airlines, Loyalty Points are primarily earned based on the base fare of your ticket, not the distance flown. The more you spend on eligible flights, the more Loyalty Points you earn. Your AAdvantage elite status also plays a significant role, as higher tiers receive bonus Loyalty Points on top of the base earning rate.
- Flights: Earn Loyalty Points based on the base fare of your ticket (excluding government taxes and fees).
- Credit Cards: Spending on co-branded American Airlines credit cards can also earn Loyalty Points.
- Partners: Engaging with AAdvantage partners like hotels, car rentals, and shopping portals can also contribute.
Loyalty Point Earning Rates by Status (for AA-operated flights)
The number of Loyalty Points you earn per U.S. dollar spent on eligible American Airlines flights varies significantly based on your AAdvantage elite status:
- AAdvantage Member (No Status): 5 Loyalty Points per USD
- AAdvantage Gold: 7 Loyalty Points per USD (40% bonus)
- AAdvantage Platinum: 8 Loyalty Points per USD (60% bonus)
- AAdvantage Platinum Pro: 9 Loyalty Points per USD (80% bonus)
- AAdvantage Executive Platinum: 11 Loyalty Points per USD (120% bonus)
It's important to note that Loyalty Points are earned on the base fare and carrier-imposed fees, but not on government-imposed taxes and fees. Always check your ticket breakdown to understand the eligible amount.
Using the AA Loyalty Point Calculator
Our calculator simplifies the process of estimating your Loyalty Point earnings for American Airlines flights. Here's how to use it:
- Enter Ticket Base Fare (USD): Input the base fare of your American Airlines ticket. This is the portion of your ticket price that is eligible for Loyalty Point earning, typically excluding government taxes and fees. For example, if your total ticket cost is $600 but $100 of that is taxes, you would enter $500.
- Select Your AAdvantage Status: Choose your current AAdvantage elite status from the dropdown menu. This will apply the correct bonus multiplier to your calculation.
- Click "Calculate Loyalty Points": The calculator will instantly display the estimated number of Loyalty Points you would earn for that specific flight.
This tool is perfect for planning your travel and understanding how each flight contributes to your journey towards achieving or maintaining AAdvantage elite status.
