The American Invitational Mathematics Examination (AIME) is a prestigious mathematics competition for high school students in the United States and Canada. It serves as the second step in a series of competitions that culminate in the selection of the US team for the International Mathematical Olympiad (IMO).
How AIME Qualification Works
Students typically qualify for the AIME based on their performance in the American Mathematics Competitions (AMC), specifically the AMC 10 or AMC 12. Achieving a certain score or ranking within the top percentage of participants on these initial exams earns an invitation to the AIME.
AIME Scoring and the Combined Index
The AIME consists of 15 challenging problems, each requiring a numerical answer between 000 and 999. Unlike the AMC exams, there is no penalty for incorrect answers on the AIME. Each correct answer is typically worth 1 point for the raw AIME score, making the maximum raw AIME score 15.
However, for qualification to the highly selective United States of America Mathematical Olympiad (USAMO) and United States of America Junior Mathematical Olympiad (USAJMO), a "Combined Index" is often used. This index combines a student's AMC score with their AIME performance. The standard formula for this combined index is:
Combined Index = AMC Score + (10 × AIME Correct Problems)
In this formula, each correct AIME problem is weighted as 10 points, significantly amplifying its impact on the overall index. The AMC score is usually taken directly from the AMC 10 or AMC 12 exam (out of a maximum of 150 points).
Using the AIME Combined Index Calculator
Our AIME Combined Index Calculator helps you quickly determine your potential combined score based on your AMC performance and your estimated or actual AIME correct answers. Simply input:
- Your AMC 10/12 Score: Enter your score from either the AMC 10 or AMC 12 exam. This score is out of a maximum of 150 points.
- Number of AIME Problems Correct: Input the number of problems you answered correctly on the AIME (out of 15).
The calculator will then provide you with two key metrics:
- Calculated AIME Score (Points): This is your AIME raw score multiplied by 10, reflecting its weight in the combined index.
- Combined USAMO/USAJMO Index: This is the sum of your AMC score and your weighted AIME score, providing a crucial indicator for advanced competition qualification.
Example Calculation:
Let's say a student scored 120 points on the AMC 12 and answered 8 problems correctly on the AIME.
- AMC Score = 120
- AIME Correct Problems = 8
- Calculated AIME Score (Points) = 8 × 10 = 80
- Combined USAMO/USAJMO Index = 120 + 80 = 200
This combined index of 200 would then be compared against the qualification thresholds for USAMO or USAJMO for that particular year.
