Understanding Albon (Sulfadimethoxine) Dosage

Albon is a commonly prescribed sulfonamide antibiotic used in veterinary medicine to treat infections such as coccidiosis in dogs and cats. It works by preventing the growth and multiplication of the bacteria or parasites.

Standard Dosage Guidelines

The dosing protocol for Albon typically follows a two-step process to quickly establish effective blood levels of the medication:

  • Day 1 (Initial Loading Dose): 25 mg per pound (or 55 mg per kg) of body weight.
  • Days 2-10 (Maintenance Dose): 12.5 mg per pound (or 27.5 mg per kg) of body weight once daily.

Example Calculation

For a 10-pound dog using a 5% (50mg/mL) oral suspension:

  • Day 1: 10 lbs × 25 mg = 250 mg. Since the liquid is 50 mg/mL, you would administer 5 mL (250 / 50).
  • Subsequent Days: 10 lbs × 12.5 mg = 125 mg. You would administer 2.5 mL (125 / 50).

Critical Safety Information

Hydration is vital while your pet is on Albon. Sulfonamides can cause crystals to form in the urine if the pet is dehydrated. Ensure your pet has access to fresh water at all times. If you notice signs of an allergic reaction (swelling, hives) or decreased appetite, contact your veterinarian immediately.
