Understanding American Airlines AAdvantage Miles & Loyalty Points
The American Airlines AAdvantage program allows travelers to earn miles and Loyalty Points, which can be redeemed for flights, upgrades, and other travel benefits. This calculator helps you estimate how many redeemable miles and Loyalty Points you'll earn on American Airlines-operated flights based on your eligible ticket price and AAdvantage elite status.
How Miles and Loyalty Points Are Earned
For flights operated by American Airlines, both redeemable miles and Loyalty Points are primarily earned based on the eligible ticket price (base fare plus carrier-imposed fees, excluding government-imposed taxes and fees) and your AAdvantage elite status. The higher your status, the more miles and Loyalty Points you'll earn per dollar spent.
Earning Rates Per Eligible Dollar:
- General Member: 5 miles & 5 Loyalty Points per dollar
- AAdvantage Gold: 7 miles & 7 Loyalty Points per dollar
- AAdvantage Platinum: 8 miles & 8 Loyalty Points per dollar
- AAdvantage Platinum Pro: 9 miles & 9 Loyalty Points per dollar
- AAdvantage Executive Platinum: 11 miles & 11 Loyalty Points per dollar
It's important to note that earning rates for partner airlines (like British Airways, Iberia, etc.) can differ and are often based on distance flown and fare class, rather than ticket price. This calculator focuses specifically on American Airlines-operated flights.
What are Loyalty Points?
Loyalty Points are American Airlines' metric for earning elite status. Unlike redeemable miles which you spend, Loyalty Points accumulate throughout a qualification year (March 1 to February 28/29) to determine your AAdvantage status for the following year. The more Loyalty Points you earn, the higher your elite status tier (Gold, Platinum, Platinum Pro, Executive Platinum) will be, unlocking more benefits like complimentary upgrades, bonus miles, and lounge access.
Using the Calculator
To use the calculator, simply enter the eligible ticket price of your American Airlines flight. This is typically the fare shown before taxes and government fees are added. Then, select your current AAdvantage elite status from the dropdown menu. Click "Calculate Miles & Loyalty Points" to see your estimated earnings.
Example Calculation:
Let's say you purchase an American Airlines flight with an eligible ticket price of $750, and you are an AAdvantage Platinum member.
- Platinum Earning Rate: 8 miles & 8 Loyalty Points per dollar
- Redeemable Miles Earned: $750 * 8 = 6,000 miles
- Loyalty Points Earned: $750 * 8 = 6,000 Loyalty Points
This means for this flight, you would earn 6,000 redeemable miles to use for future travel and 6,000 Loyalty Points towards maintaining or achieving a higher elite status.
