The Chinese Horoscope, also known as the Chinese Zodiac, is a traditional classification scheme based on the lunar calendar that assigns an animal and its reputed attributes to each year in a repeating 12-year cycle. Originating in ancient China, this system is deeply embedded in Chinese culture and is used for personality analysis, fortune-telling, and compatibility assessments.
The 12 Zodiac Animals
Each of the 12 animals in the Chinese Zodiac cycle represents a specific set of characteristics and traits. The order of the animals is traditionally Rat, Ox, Tiger, Rabbit, Dragon, Snake, Horse, Goat (or Sheep/Ram), Monkey, Rooster, Dog, and Pig. Legend has it that the Jade Emperor summoned all the animals to a great race, and their order in the zodiac was determined by their finish in this race.
- Rat: Quick-witted, resourceful, versatile, kind.
- Ox: Diligent, dependable, strong, determined.
- Tiger: Brave, confident, competitive, unpredictable.
- Rabbit: Quiet, elegant, kind, responsible.
- Dragon: Confident, intelligent, enthusiastic, charismatic.
- Snake: Enigmatic, intelligent, wise, decisive.
- Horse: Energetic, active, animated, independent.
- Goat: Calm, gentle, sympathetic, artistic.
- Monkey: Sharp, smart, curious, mischievous.
- Rooster: Observant, hardworking, courageous, confident.
- Dog: Lovely, honest, prudent, loyal.
- Pig: Compassionate, generous, diligent, honest.
How Your Zodiac Animal is Determined
Unlike the Western zodiac, which is based on the month of birth, the Chinese Zodiac is primarily determined by the year of birth. However, it's crucial to note that the Chinese New Year (also known as the Lunar New Year or Spring Festival) does not fall on January 1st. It typically occurs between late January and mid-February. Therefore, if you were born in January or early February, your zodiac animal might be that of the previous Gregorian year.
For example, if you were born on January 15, 1990, your zodiac animal would be the Snake (the animal for 1989), because the Chinese New Year in 1990 fell on January 27th. If you were born on February 1, 1990, your animal would be the Horse (the animal for 1990).
Our calculator provides a quick and easy way to find your animal based on the Gregorian year, using the most commonly accepted mapping. For precise astrological readings, consulting a Chinese lunar calendar for your specific birth date is recommended.
Beyond the Animal: Elements and Fixed Elements
The Chinese horoscope system is even more intricate. In addition to the 12-year animal cycle, there's also a 10-year cycle of five elements (Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal, Water), each appearing in its Yin and Yang forms. This means that every 60 years, a specific animal-element combination repeats (e.g., Wood Rat, Fire Ox). These elements further influence the personality traits associated with each animal sign, adding layers of depth to the astrological interpretation.
Furthermore, each animal sign is also associated with a "fixed element" regardless of the yearly element. For instance, the Tiger and Rabbit are associated with Wood, the Snake and Horse with Fire, the Monkey and Rooster with Metal, the Pig and Rat with Water, and the Ox, Dragon, Goat, and Dog with Earth.
