Concrete Calculator by Square Foot
Use this calculator to estimate the amount of concrete needed for your slab, footing, or other concrete project. Accurate measurements are crucial to avoid over-ordering or under-ordering concrete, saving you time and money.
Understanding Your Concrete Needs
Calculating the correct amount of concrete is a fundamental step in any construction project. This calculator helps you determine the volume of concrete required based on the dimensions of your area and the desired thickness of the slab.
How to Use the Calculator:
- Area Length (feet): Enter the total length of the area you plan to cover with concrete, measured in feet. For example, if you're pouring a driveway that is 20 feet long, enter '20'.
- Area Width (feet): Enter the total width of the area, also in feet. If your driveway is 10 feet wide, enter '10'.
- Slab Thickness (inches): Specify the desired thickness of your concrete slab in inches. Common thicknesses range from 4 inches for patios and walkways to 6 inches or more for driveways and structural slabs.
- Waste Factor (%): It's always wise to account for some waste due to spillage, uneven subgrades, or minor miscalculations. A typical waste factor is 5-10%. This calculator adds this percentage to your total volume to ensure you don't run short.
Why a Waste Factor is Important:
Even with precise measurements, various factors can lead to needing slightly more concrete than the theoretical calculation. These include:
- Uneven Subgrade: The ground beneath your slab might not be perfectly level, requiring more concrete in certain spots.
- Spillage: During pouring and finishing, some concrete can be lost.
- Measurement Errors: Small discrepancies in measuring the area can accumulate.
- Future Needs: Having a small amount extra can be useful for minor repairs or small additional pours.
Example Calculation:
Let's say you're pouring a patio that is 15 feet long by 12 feet wide, with a thickness of 4 inches, and you want to include a 10% waste factor.
- Area: 15 feet * 12 feet = 180 square feet.
- Thickness in feet: 4 inches / 12 inches/foot = 0.333 feet.
- Volume in cubic feet: 180 sq ft * 0.333 ft = 59.94 cubic feet.
- Volume in cubic yards: 59.94 cubic feet / 27 cubic feet/yard = 2.22 cubic yards.
- With Waste Factor: 2.22 cubic yards * (1 + 10/100) = 2.22 * 1.10 = 2.442 cubic yards.
So, you would need approximately 2.44 cubic yards of concrete for this project.
