- Number of Drinks: More alcohol consumed directly leads to a higher BAC. A "standard drink" is defined as containing approximately 14 grams of pure alcohol (e.g., 12 oz of 5% beer, 5 oz of 12% wine, or 1.5 oz of 40% spirits).
- Body Weight: Individuals with higher body weight generally have more body water, which dilutes the alcohol, leading to a lower BAC for the same amount of alcohol consumed.
- Gender: Women typically have less body water and higher body fat percentages than men, meaning alcohol is less diluted in their bodies. They also tend to have lower levels of alcohol dehydrogenase, an enzyme that metabolizes alcohol, leading to higher BACs than men of the same weight who consume the same amount of alcohol.
- Time Elapsed: Your liver metabolizes alcohol at a relatively constant rate, typically around 0.015% BAC per hour. The longer the time since your first drink, the more alcohol your body has processed, and your BAC will decrease.
- Other Factors: Food intake (eating before or while drinking slows absorption), medication, fatigue, and individual metabolic rates can also affect BAC.
BAC Levels and Their Effects
Understanding what different BAC levels mean is crucial for responsible drinking:
- 0.02% – 0.049%: Mild relaxation, slight mood alteration, minor loss of judgment. Some effects on driving ability may begin.
- 0.05% – 0.079%: Reduced coordination, impaired judgment, exaggerated behavior, difficulty steering. Driving ability is significantly affected.

Let's consider a 180 lb male who consumes 3 standard drinks over a period of 2 hours.
- Total Alcohol Consumed: 3 drinks * 14 grams/drink = 42 grams of alcohol.
- Body Weight in Grams: 180 lbs * 453.592 grams/lb = 81,646.56 grams.

- Initial BAC: (42 grams / (81,646.56 grams * 0.68)) * 100 = (42 / 55,519.66) * 100 ≈ 0.0756%
- Metabolized Alcohol: 0.015% per hour * 2 hours = 0.03%
- Estimated Final BAC: 0.0756% – 0.03% = 0.0456%
In this scenario, the estimated BAC would be approximately 0.046%, indicating reduced coordination and impaired judgment, making driving unsafe.
