Understanding Fast CAT Calculations
Fast CAT (Course Ability Test) is a timed 100-yard dash where dogs run individually in a straight line. It is one of the fastest-growing dog sports because it taps into the natural prey drive of canines. To accurately measure a dog's performance, the AKC (American Kennel Club) uses a specific formula to convert time into miles per hour (MPH) and then applies a handicap based on the dog's size to award points.
The Math Behind the Speed
To calculate the MPH of a dog running a 100-yard course, we use the following physical conversion:
- Distance: 100 yards (300 feet)
- Constant: 204.545 (This is derived from 300ft / 5280ft * 3600 seconds)
- Formula: 204.545 ÷ Time (seconds) = MPH
Point Handicaps and Height Classes
In Fast CAT, points are awarded based on the dog's speed multiplied by a handicap determined by their height at the withers (the highest point of the dog's shoulder blades). This ensures that smaller dogs can compete fairly against larger breeds with longer strides.
| Dog Height | Handicap Multiplier |
|---|---|
| Under 12 inches | 2.0x |
| 12 to 18 inches | 1.5x |
| Over 18 inches | 1.0x |
Fast CAT Example Calculation
Let's say you have a Beagle that stands 14 inches tall. During the 100-yard dash, the Beagle finishes in 10.5 seconds.
- Calculate MPH: 204.545 ÷ 10.5 = 19.48 MPH
- Identify Handicap: A 14-inch dog falls into the 1.5x multiplier category.
- Calculate Points: 19.48 × 1.5 = 29.22 Points
Accumulating these points leads to titles such as BCAT (150 points), DCAT (500 points), and FCAT (1,000 points).
Tips for a Faster Run
- Warm-up: Ensure your dog's muscles are ready for a sprint to prevent injury.
- The Release: A clean, focused release at the start line can shave tenths of a second off the time.
- Motivation: Use a "catcher" at the finish line that the dog is excited to run toward, such as a favorite toy or family member.
