How Much Should You Tip for Grocery Delivery?
In the age of convenience, services like Instacart, Shipt, Walmart+, and DoorDash have changed how we shop. However, knowing the appropriate etiquette for tipping your grocery shopper and driver can be confusing. Unlike a traditional restaurant setting, grocery delivery involves shopping, communicating about replacements, and transporting heavy items.
The Standard Tipping Rule
The baseline for grocery delivery tipping is 15% to 20% of your total order cost. While many apps default to a 5% tip, industry experts and drivers generally consider this insufficient, especially for larger orders. At a minimum, you should never tip less than $5, regardless of the order size.
When to Tip More
There are several scenarios where you should consider increasing your tip above the standard 15%:
- Heavy Items: If you ordered cases of water, bags of pet food, or multiple gallons of milk, add $2-$5 extra for the physical labor involved.
- Inclement Weather: If your driver is navigating snow, heavy rain, or extreme heat, a "weather hazard" bonus is appreciated.
- Complex Logistics: Do you live on the 4th floor with no elevator? Is your apartment complex a maze? Add extra for the additional time required.
- Distance: If the grocery store is more than 5-10 miles from your home, consider adding a few dollars to help cover the driver's fuel costs.
Example Tipping Scenarios
| Order Type | Total Cost | Recommended Tip |
|---|---|---|
| Quick Run (5 items) | $35.00 | $5.25 – $7.00 |
| Weekly Family Groceries | $150.00 | $22.50 – $30.00 |
| Bulk/Heavy Order (Water/Soda) | $200.00 | $40.00+ |
Frequently Asked Questions
Both are acceptable. App tips are easier for record-keeping, but drivers often prefer cash as they receive 100% of it immediately. If tipping in cash, it's polite to put a small tip in the app so the driver knows they aren't working for $0 base pay.
If items were missing due to store stock, that isn't the driver's fault. However, if the service was poor due to negligence, you can lower the tip. Most shoppers recommend a minimum 10% even for subpar service, as they are using their own vehicles and fuel.
