Astrological House Cusp Calculator (Equal House System)

In astrology, houses represent different areas of life. There are 12 houses, and their starting points, called cusps, are determined by your birth time and location. This calculator uses the Equal House system, where each house is exactly 30 degrees, and the Ascendant (the cusp of the 1st house) is the starting point for all other house calculations.

Enter your Ascendant's sign and degree, and select a target house to find its cusp position.

Understanding Astrological Houses and Cusps

In astrology, the zodiac is divided into 12 signs, each representing a specific archetype or energy. Similarly, the sky around us is divided into 12 "houses," which represent different areas of life experience. While the zodiac signs describe how energy manifests, the houses describe where that energy plays out in your life.

The 12 Houses and Their Meanings:

  • 1st House (Ascendant): Self, personality, appearance, first impressions.
  • 2nd House: Personal resources, values, money, possessions, self-worth.
  • 3rd House: Communication, siblings, short journeys, early education, local community.
  • 4th House (IC): Home, family, roots, ancestry, emotional foundations, end of life.
  • 5th House: Creativity, romance, children, hobbies, speculation, pleasure.
  • 6th House: Work, daily routines, health, service, pets.
  • 7th House (Descendant): Partnerships, marriage, open enemies, contracts, one-on-one relationships.
  • 8th House: Shared resources, intimacy, transformation, death, rebirth, occult, taxes, inheritance.
  • 9th House: Higher education, philosophy, long journeys, foreign cultures, spirituality, law.
  • 10th House (Midheaven/MC): Career, public image, reputation, social status, life direction.
  • 11th House: Friends, groups, hopes, wishes, social causes, humanitarian efforts.
  • 12th House: Subconscious, hidden matters, spirituality, solitude, self-undoing, institutions.

What is a House Cusp?

A house cusp is the dividing line or beginning point of an astrological house. Each cusp is located at a specific degree of a zodiac sign. When a planet or another astrological point falls into a particular house, it influences the themes of that house. The sign on the cusp of a house also colors the expression of that life area.

The Equal House System

There are several house systems used in astrology, each with its own method of dividing the sky. The Equal House system is one of the simplest and most intuitive. In this system:

  1. The Ascendant (the degree of the zodiac rising on the eastern horizon at the moment of birth) always marks the cusp of the 1st House.
  2. Each subsequent house cusp is exactly 30 degrees away from the previous one. For example, if your 1st House cusp is at 15° Aries, your 2nd House cusp will be at 15° Taurus, your 3rd House cusp at 15° Gemini, and so on.

This calculator specifically uses the Equal House system for its calculations.

How to Use This Calculator

To use this calculator, you need to know your Ascendant (Rising Sign) and its exact degree. This information is typically found in your birth chart, which requires your precise birth date, time, and location. Once you have your Ascendant details:

  1. Select your Ascendant Sign: Choose the zodiac sign your Ascendant falls in from the dropdown.
  2. Enter Ascendant Degree: Input the specific degree (0-29) of your Ascendant within that sign.
  3. Select Target House: Choose the house number (1st through 12th) for which you want to find the cusp.
  4. Click "Calculate House Cusp": The calculator will then display the zodiac sign and degree of the cusp for your selected house.

Examples:

Example 1: If your Ascendant is 10° Leo and you want to find your 4th House Cusp:

  • Select "Leo" for Ascendant Sign.
  • Enter "10" for Ascendant Degree.
  • Select "4th House" for Target House Number.
  • Result: The 4th House Cusp would be at 10° Scorpio. (Leo + 3 signs = Scorpio)

Example 2: If your Ascendant is 25° Capricorn and you want to find your 7th House Cusp:

  • Select "Capricorn" for Ascendant Sign.
  • Enter "25" for Ascendant Degree.
  • Select "7th House" for Target House Number.
  • Result: The 7th House Cusp would be at 25° Cancer. (Capricorn + 6 signs = Cancer)
