Understanding Astrological Houses
In astrology, your birth chart is divided into twelve segments known as "houses." These houses represent different areas of your life, from your personal identity and finances to relationships, career, and spirituality. While planets and zodiac signs describe what energies are at play, the houses describe where these energies manifest in your life.
How Houses Are Determined
The calculation of astrological houses is complex and traditionally depends on your exact birth time and location (latitude and longitude). These factors determine your Ascendant, or Rising Sign, which is the zodiac sign that was rising on the eastern horizon at the moment of your birth. The Ascendant always marks the cusp of your 1st House.
There are several "house systems" used by astrologers, each with its own mathematical method for dividing the sky. Common systems include Placidus, Koch, Whole Sign, and Equal House. This calculator uses the Equal House System for simplicity.
The Equal House System Explained
In the Equal House system, each of the twelve houses is exactly 30 degrees wide. The Ascendant (the degree of the zodiac rising on the eastern horizon) marks the beginning of the 1st House. From there, each subsequent house cusp is simply 30 degrees after the previous one. For example, if your Ascendant is 10° Aries, your 1st House begins at 10° Aries, your 2nd House begins at 10° Taurus, your 3rd House at 10° Gemini, and so on.
This system is straightforward and provides a clear progression of signs through your houses, making it an excellent starting point for understanding house meanings.
The Meaning of Each House
Each of the 12 houses governs specific life themes:
1st House (Ascendant): The House of Self, identity, appearance, vitality, and how you present yourself to the world.
2nd House: The House of Possessions, values, money, resources, and self-worth.
3rd House: The House of Communication, siblings, short journeys, early education, and local community.
4th House (IC): The House of Home, family, roots, ancestry, emotional foundations, and the mother/nurturing parent.
5th House: The House of Creativity, children, romance, pleasure, speculation, and self-expression.
6th House: The House of Health, daily routines, work, service, pets, and self-improvement.
7th House (Descendant): The House of Partnerships, marriage, open enemies, contracts, and one-on-one relationships.
8th House: The House of Transformation, shared resources, intimacy, death, rebirth, and occult matters.
9th House: The House of Higher Learning, philosophy, long journeys, foreign cultures, religion, and publishing.
10th House (MC): The House of Career, public image, reputation, ambition, authority figures, and the father/provider parent.
11th House: The House of Friendships, groups, hopes, wishes, social causes, and humanitarian efforts.
