Square footage is a fundamental measurement of area, commonly used in real estate, construction, and home improvement projects. It represents the total two-dimensional space within a given boundary, expressed in square feet. For rectangular or square areas, it's calculated by multiplying the length by the width.
Why is Square Footage Important?

How to Measure Square Footage
Measuring square footage accurately is crucial. Here's a step-by-step guide:
For Rectangular or Square Rooms:
- Clear the Area: Move any furniture or obstacles that might impede accurate measurement.
- Measure Length: Use a tape measure to find the length of the room from one wall to the opposite wall. Measure along the longest side.
- Measure Width: Measure the width of the room from one wall to the opposite wall, perpendicular to your length measurement.
- Multiply: Multiply the length by the width. For example, a room that is 10 feet long and 12 feet wide has a square footage of 10 ft * 12 ft = 120 sq ft.
- Repeat for Each Room: If you're calculating the total square footage of a house, measure each room individually and then add them up.
For Irregularly Shaped Rooms:
If a room isn't a perfect rectangle, you'll need to break it down into smaller, manageable rectangular or square sections. Measure each section separately and then add their individual square footages together.
Example: L-shaped room
- Divide the L-shape into two rectangles (e.g., Rectangle A and Rectangle B).
- Measure the length and width of Rectangle A and calculate its square footage.
- Measure the length and width of Rectangle B and calculate its square footage.
- Add the square footage of Rectangle A and Rectangle B to get the total square footage of the L-shaped room.
Important Considerations:
- Accuracy: Measure twice to ensure accuracy.
- Obstacles: For areas with obstacles like fireplaces or built-in cabinets, you might need to measure around them or subtract their area if they are significant and not part of the usable floor space.
- Openings: Do not subtract for doorways or small openings.
- Walls: Typically, square footage is measured from the inside face of the walls.

Example Calculation:
Let's say you want to calculate the square footage for a living room and a bedroom:
- Living Room: Length = 18 feet, Width = 15 feet
- Bedroom: Length = 12 feet, Width = 10 feet

- Enter "12" for Length and "10" for Width in Area 2.

The result would be:
