Whether you're a freelancer, an hourly employee, or a project manager, accurately tracking hours worked is crucial for payroll, billing, and productivity analysis. Our Hours Worked Calculator simplifies this process, allowing you to quickly determine the total time spent on tasks or shifts, even accounting for breaks and potential overnight work.
How it Works
This calculator takes your start time, end time, and any break duration, then calculates the net hours worked for a single day. You can also specify the number of days to get a cumulative total for recurring shifts, making it ideal for weekly or bi-weekly time tracking.
Inputs Explained:
- Start Time: The exact time your work period began (e.g., 09:00 for 9 AM).
- End Time: The exact time your work period concluded (e.g., 17:30 for 5:30 PM).
- Break Duration (minutes): The total time spent on breaks during your work period, entered in minutes (e.g., 30 for a 30-minute lunch break). This time will be subtracted from your total shift duration.
- Number of Days (optional): If you want to calculate total hours for multiple identical shifts, enter the number of days. By default, it's set to 1.
Outputs:
- Daily Net Hours: The total hours and minutes worked for a single day after deducting breaks.
- Total Net Hours (X days): If you entered more than one day, this shows the cumulative total hours and minutes worked over the specified number of days.
Why Use This Calculator?

- Freelance Billing: Generate precise invoices for clients based on actual work time.
- Productivity Tracking: Understand how much time you dedicate to different projects or tasks.
- Compliance: Maintain records for labor law compliance.
- Time Management: Gain insights into your work patterns to improve efficiency.
Examples:
Example 1: A Standard Workday
- Start Time: 09:00
- End Time: 17:00
- Break Duration: 60 minutes
- Number of Days: 1
- Calculation: (17:00 – 09:00) = 8 hours. 8 hours – 60 minutes (1 hour) = 7 hours.
- Result: Daily Net Hours: 7 hours and 0 minutes
Example 2: A Shift with a Short Break
- Start Time: 08:30
- End Time: 16:45
- Break Duration: 30 minutes
- Number of Days: 1
- Calculation: (16:45 – 08:30) = 8 hours and 15 minutes (495 minutes). 495 minutes – 30 minutes = 465 minutes. 465 minutes = 7 hours and 45 minutes.
- Result: Daily Net Hours: 7 hours and 45 minutes
Example 3: Calculating for a Week
- Start Time: 09:00
- End Time: 17:30
- Break Duration: 45 minutes
- Number of Days: 5
- Calculation (Daily): (17:30 – 09:00) = 8 hours and 30 minutes (510 minutes). 510 minutes – 45 minutes = 465 minutes. Daily Net Hours: 7 hours and 45 minutes.
- Calculation (Weekly): 465 minutes/day * 5 days = 2325 minutes. 2325 minutes = 38 hours and 45 minutes.
- Result: Daily Net Hours: 7 hours and 45 minutes. Total Net Hours (5 days): 38 hours and 45 minutes.
Example 4: Overnight Shift
- Start Time: 22:00
- End Time: 06:00
- Break Duration: 60 minutes
- Number of Days: 1
- Calculation: (22:00 to 00:00) = 2 hours. (00:00 to 06:00) = 6 hours. Total duration = 8 hours (480 minutes). 480 minutes – 60 minutes = 420 minutes. 420 minutes = 7 hours.
- Result: Daily Net Hours: 7 hours and 0 minutes
