Hitch Weight Calculator
Use this calculator to estimate the ideal hitch weight (also known as tongue weight) for your trailer based on its total weight and a recommended percentage.

Hitch weight, often referred to as tongue weight, is a critical factor for safe and stable towing. It represents the downward force exerted by the trailer's coupler onto the tow vehicle's hitch ball. Maintaining the correct hitch weight is paramount to prevent dangerous towing conditions such as trailer sway, loss of steering control, and excessive strain on your tow vehicle.
Why is Hitch Weight Important?
- Stability: Proper hitch weight ensures the trailer tracks smoothly behind the tow vehicle, significantly reducing the risk of trailer sway, which can lead to loss of control.
- Steering Control: Too little hitch weight can lift the front of the tow vehicle, reducing traction on the steering tires and making steering difficult and unsafe.
- Braking Performance: An unbalanced load can negatively impact the tow vehicle's braking ability and stability during deceleration.
- Component Stress: Correct hitch weight distributes the load appropriately, preventing undue stress on the tow vehicle's suspension, tires, and hitch components.
Recommended Hitch Weight Percentages
The ideal hitch weight is typically a percentage of the trailer's total loaded weight. This percentage varies depending on the type of trailer:
- Conventional Trailers (Travel Trailers, Boat Trailers, Utility Trailers): The recommended hitch weight is generally between 10% and 15% of the total loaded trailer weight. For most travel trailers, aiming for 12-13% is a good starting point.
- Fifth-Wheel Trailers: Fifth-wheel trailers, due to their design, carry a much higher percentage of their weight over the hitch (pin box). The recommended hitch weight for fifth-wheel trailers is typically between 15% and 25% of the total loaded trailer weight.
Always consult your trailer and tow vehicle owner's manuals for specific recommendations, as these can sometimes vary.
How to Use the Hitch Weight Calculator
- Total Trailer Weight (lbs): Enter the fully loaded weight of your trailer. This includes all cargo, water, propane, and anything else you'll be carrying. If you don't know this, you'll need to weigh your trailer at a certified scale (e.g., truck stop).
- Target Hitch Weight Percentage (%): Input your desired hitch weight percentage. For conventional trailers, start with 12-13%. For fifth-wheel trailers, use 15-20%.
- Click "Calculate Hitch Weight": The calculator will then provide an estimated hitch weight in pounds.
Consequences of Incorrect Hitch Weight
- Too Little Hitch Weight: If the hitch weight is too low (e.g., less than 10% for conventional trailers), the trailer can become unstable and prone to dangerous sway, especially at highway speeds or in windy conditions. This is the most common cause of trailer accidents.
- Too Much Hitch Weight: If the hitch weight is too high (e.g., more than 15% for conventional trailers), it can overload the rear axle of the tow vehicle, potentially causing excessive squat, reduced steering control, and increased wear on tires and suspension components. It can also exceed the tow vehicle's hitch capacity.
Adjusting Your Hitch Weight
Once you've calculated your ideal hitch weight, you can adjust it by:
- Loading Cargo: Distribute cargo inside your trailer. Moving heavy items forward increases hitch weight, while moving them backward decreases it.
- Water Tanks: The amount of water in your fresh, grey, and black tanks can significantly impact hitch weight.
- Weight Distribution Hitches: For conventional trailers, a weight distribution hitch can help distribute some of the hitch weight to the front axle of the tow vehicle and the axles of the trailer, improving stability and leveling the tow vehicle.
Examples:
Example 1: Conventional Travel Trailer
- Total Trailer Weight: 6,000 lbs
- Target Hitch Weight Percentage: 12%
- Calculated Hitch Weight: (6,000 lbs * 12%) / 100 = 720 lbs
Example 2: Utility Trailer
- Total Trailer Weight: 2,500 lbs
- Target Hitch Weight Percentage: 15%
- Calculated Hitch Weight: (2,500 lbs * 15%) / 100 = 375 lbs
Example 3: Fifth-Wheel Trailer
- Total Trailer Weight: 12,000 lbs
- Target Hitch Weight Percentage: 18%
- Calculated Hitch Weight: (12,000 lbs * 18%) / 100 = 2,160 lbs
Always verify your actual hitch weight using a tongue weight scale or by weighing your trailer at a certified scale to ensure safe towing.
