SSI Benefits Calculator
Use this calculator to estimate your potential Supplemental Security Income (SSI) benefits. SSI is a federal program that provides monthly payments to adults and children with a disability or blindness who have income and resources below specific financial limits. It also provides payments to people aged 65 or older without disabilities who meet the financial limits.
The calculation primarily considers your living arrangement, monthly earned income, and monthly unearned income against the maximum federal benefit amount (FBR). Please note that this is an estimate, and the Social Security Administration (SSA) makes the final determination based on a comprehensive review of your specific situation, including resource limits and other factors not covered by this simplified calculator.
The maximum federal benefit for an individual. (e.g., $963 for 2024)
The maximum federal benefit for a couple. (e.g., $1445 for 2024)
This includes wages, net earnings from self-employment, etc. (e.g., 500)
This includes Social Security benefits, pensions, VA benefits, interest, dividends, cash from friends/relatives, etc. (e.g., 100)

Understanding SSI Benefits Calculation
Supplemental Security Income (SSI) is a needs-based program administered by the Social Security Administration (SSA). It provides financial assistance to individuals who are aged (65 or older), blind, or disabled, and who have limited income and resources. Unlike Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI), SSI eligibility is not based on work history but on financial need.
Key Factors in SSI Calculation:
- Maximum Federal Benefit Amount (FBR): This is the base amount set by the federal government each year. For 2024, the FBR is $963 for an individual and $1,445 for a couple. Your actual benefit cannot exceed this amount (plus any state supplement).
-
Countable Income: Your SSI benefit is reduced by your "countable income." Not all income is counted dollar-for-dollar. The SSA has specific rules for disregarding certain portions of your income.
-
Earned Income Disregard: The first $65 of your monthly earned income is not counted. Of the remaining earned income, only half (50%) is counted towards your countable income.
Example: If you earn $500 per month, the first $65 is disregarded, leaving $435. Half of $435 ($217.50) is your countable earned income. -
Unearned Income Disregard: The first $20 of your monthly unearned income is not counted. The remaining unearned income is counted dollar-for-dollar.
Example: If you receive $100 in unearned income (e.g., a small pension), the first $20 is disregarded, leaving $80. This $80 is your countable unearned income. - General Income Disregard: If you have both earned and unearned income, the $20 general income disregard is usually applied first to your unearned income. If you have no unearned income, it can be applied to your earned income before the $65 earned income disregard. For simplicity, our calculator applies the $20 disregard to unearned income first, and the $65 disregard to earned income.
-
Earned Income Disregard: The first $65 of your monthly earned income is not counted. Of the remaining earned income, only half (50%) is counted towards your countable income.
- Living Arrangement: Your living situation can affect your FBR. For instance, if you live in someone else's household and do not pay your fair share of food and shelter, your FBR may be reduced by one-third. This calculator assumes standard living arrangements.
- State Supplements: Many states provide an additional payment, called a state supplement, on top of the federal SSI benefit. This calculator only estimates the federal portion of the SSI benefit.
- Resource Limits: In addition to income, SSI applicants must meet resource limits. For 2024, the resource limit is $2,000 for an individual and $3,000 for a couple. Certain assets, like your home and one vehicle, are typically not counted. This calculator does not assess resource eligibility.
How the Calculator Works:
The calculator takes your chosen FBR (based on individual or couple status), your monthly earned income, and your monthly unearned income. It then applies the income disregards to determine your total countable income. Finally, it subtracts your total countable income from the FBR to provide an estimated monthly SSI benefit.
Formula Used:
Countable Earned Income = MAX(0, (Monthly Earned Income - 65) / 2)Countable Unearned Income = MAX(0, Monthly Unearned Income - 20)Total Countable Income = Countable Earned Income + Countable Unearned IncomeEstimated SSI Benefit = MAX(0, FBR - Total Countable Income)
Important Considerations:
- This calculator provides an estimate only. The SSA has complex rules and considers many factors.
- State supplements are not included in this calculation.
- Resource limits are not assessed by this calculator.
- Other income exclusions and deductions may apply in specific situations.
- Always contact the Social Security Administration directly for an accurate determination of your eligibility and benefit amount.
Example Calculation:
Let's say an individual has:
- Living Arrangement: Individual
- Monthly Earned Income: $700
- Monthly Unearned Income: $50
- FBR (Individual): $963
- Countable Earned Income:
- $700 (earned income) – $65 (earned income disregard) = $635
- $635 / 2 = $317.50 (countable earned income)
- Countable Unearned Income:
- $50 (unearned income) – $20 (unearned income disregard) = $30
- $30 (countable unearned income)
- Total Countable Income:
- $317.50 (countable earned) + $30 (countable unearned) = $347.50
- Estimated SSI Benefit:
- $963 (FBR) – $347.50 (total countable income) = $615.50
In this example, the estimated monthly SSI benefit would be $615.50.
