How Much Masonry Sand Do I Need?

Masonry sand, often called "washed sand" or "bricklayer's sand," is a fine-grained material used primarily in construction projects where a smooth finish is required. Unlike concrete sand, which contains larger aggregates, masonry sand is screened and washed to ensure consistency. Determining the exact amount needed is crucial for budgeting and logistics, especially since sand is heavy and expensive to transport.

The Masonry Sand Calculation Formula

Calculating the volume of sand required for a rectangular area is a three-step process:

  1. Calculate Square Footage: Multiply the Length (ft) by the Width (ft).
  2. Calculate Cubic Footage: Multiply the square footage by the Depth (converted to feet). To convert inches to feet, divide by 12.
  3. Convert to Cubic Yards: Divide the total cubic feet by 27 (since there are 27 cubic feet in one cubic yard).

Formula: (Length × Width × (Depth / 12)) / 27 = Cubic Yards

Practical Example

If you are building a sandbox that is 8 feet long, 8 feet wide, and you want to fill it to a depth of 6 inches:

  • 8 ft × 8 ft = 64 square feet
  • 6 inches = 0.5 feet
  • 64 sq ft × 0.5 ft = 32 cubic feet
  • 32 / 27 = 1.19 Cubic Yards

Since masonry sand weighs roughly 1.35 tons per yard, you would need approximately 1.6 tons of sand for this project.

Common Uses for Masonry Sand

  • Mortar Mix: Combined with cement and lime for brick and block laying.
  • Paver Joints: Swept into the gaps between paving stones to lock them in place.

Weight and Bagging Considerations

When purchasing masonry sand, you have two main options: bulk delivery or bags. Bulk is significantly cheaper for large projects but requires a delivery area.
