How to Use the Mobile Home Skirting Calculator
Calculating skirting for a mobile home requires three primary measurements. Accuracy is key to ensuring you don't overspend on materials or find yourself short in the middle of installation.
Step 1: Measuring the Perimeter
The perimeter is the total distance around the base of your home. For a standard rectangular mobile home, you simply need the length and the width. Our calculator uses the formula (Length x 2) + (Width x 2) to determine the total linear feet required.
Step 2: Measuring Average Height
Because manufactured homes are often placed on slightly uneven ground, the height from the ground to the bottom rail of the home can vary. To get the average height:
- Measure the height at each corner of the home.
- Measure the height at the midpoint of each side.
- Add these measurements together and divide by the number of measurements taken.
Understanding the Results
Once you enter your dimensions, the calculator provides four critical numbers:
- Total Perimeter: The linear feet of track (top and bottom) you will need.
- Total Square Footage: Useful if you are buying skirting sold by the square foot (like some stone or brick faux panels).
- Required Panels: The number of vertical panels needed to cover the perimeter. This assumes panels are installed vertically.
- 10% Waste Factor: We highly recommend purchasing at least 10% extra to account for cutting errors, overlaps, and corners.
Types of Skirting Materials
When choosing your materials, consider the following popular options:
- Vinyl: The most common and affordable option. It's easy to cut and install.
- Concrete/HardieBoard: Offers superior durability and rodent protection but requires more labor to install.
- Metal: Extremely durable and fire-resistant.
- Faux Stone/Brick: Provides a high-end look that increases curb appeal.
Installation Tip
Always remember to include ventilation. For every 150 square feet of floor space in the home, you typically need 1 square foot of venting in your skirting. This prevents moisture buildup and mold growth in your crawlspace.
