Powerball Payout Estimator
Use this calculator to estimate your potential Powerball winnings based on the number of balls you matched and whether you played with Power Play.
Understanding Powerball Payouts
Powerball is one of the most popular lottery games in the United States, known for its massive jackpots. To play, you select five numbers from 1 to 69 (white balls) and one number from 1 to 26 (the red Powerball). To win the jackpot, you must match all five white balls and the Powerball.
How Payouts Work
Powerball offers nine ways to win a prize, ranging from a few dollars to the multi-million dollar jackpot. The prize amounts for matching fewer balls are fixed, while the jackpot amount is pari-mutuel, meaning it depends on ticket sales and is split among all jackpot winners.
- 5 White Balls + Powerball: Jackpot (variable)
- 5 White Balls: $1,000,000
- 4 White Balls + Powerball: $50,000
- 4 White Balls: $100
- 3 White Balls + Powerball: $100
- 3 White Balls: $7
- 2 White Balls + Powerball: $7
- 1 White Ball + Powerball: $4
- 0 White Balls + Powerball: $4
The Power Play Option
For an additional dollar per ticket, players can add the "Power Play" option. This feature can multiply non-jackpot prizes by 2, 3, 4, 5, or even 10 times. The 10x multiplier is only available when the advertised jackpot is $150 million or less. The $1,000,000 prize for matching five white balls without the Powerball is an exception; it is automatically doubled to $2,000,000 with Power Play, regardless of the multiplier drawn.
Important Considerations
It's crucial to remember that the estimated payouts from this calculator do not account for taxes. Lottery winnings are subject to federal income tax, and often state and local taxes as well, which can significantly reduce the take-home amount. Also, jackpot winners typically have the option to receive their prize as an annuity (payments over 30 years) or a lump-sum cash payment, with the cash option being a lower amount than the advertised annuity jackpot.
This calculator provides an estimate based on standard Powerball rules and fixed prize amounts. Actual payouts may vary slightly based on specific state regulations or if there are multiple winners for a prize tier.
