- Ridge Board Thickness: The ridge board is a non-structural board at the peak of the roof where the tops of the rafters meet. Its thickness needs to be accounted for because it reduces the effective run of each rafter. A common thickness for a 2x lumber ridge board is 1.5 inches.
How the Calculator Works
Our Rafter Length Calculator uses the principles of trigonometry and the Pythagorean theorem (a² + b² = c²) to determine the precise length of your rafters. Here's a breakdown of the steps:
- Determine Half-Span and Effective Run: The total building span is divided by two to get the horizontal run for one side of the roof. Then, half of the ridge board's thickness is subtracted from this run to find the "effective run" for a single rafter, as the rafter doesn't extend to the very center of the ridge.
- Calculate Total Rise: Using the effective run and the roof pitch (X in 12), the total vertical rise from the wall plate to the top of the rafter at the ridge is calculated.
- Calculate Main Rafter Length: With the effective run (horizontal leg) and the total rise (vertical leg), the Pythagorean theorem is applied to find the hypotenuse, which is the "line length" of the main rafter section.
- Calculate Overhang Rafter Length: The horizontal overhang distance is used along with the roof pitch to determine the corresponding vertical rise for the overhang. The Pythagorean theorem is then applied again to find the actual rafter length needed for the overhang section.
- Sum for Total Rafter Length: The main rafter length and the overhang rafter length are added together to give you the total required length for each common rafter.

- Main Rafter Length = √(143.25² + 71.625²) ≈ 160.29 inches
- Overhang Rise = (18 inches / 12) * 6 = 9 inches
- Overhang Rafter Length = √(18² + 9²) ≈ 20.12 inches
- Total Rafter Length = 160.29 + 20.12 = 180.41 inches
- Converted to feet and inches: 180.41 inches ≈ 15 feet, 0.41 inches
