Understanding Saddle Sizing for Riders
Finding the correct saddle size is critical for both rider comfort and the horse's performance. A saddle that is too small will push the rider against the pommel or swell, while a saddle that is too large makes it difficult to maintain a balanced position.
How to Measure Your Femur
To get the most accurate English saddle size, sit in a chair with your feet flat on the ground and your back against the chair. Measure from the back of your buttock to the very front of your knee. This "femur length" is the industry standard for determining seat size in English disciplines.
English vs. Western Sizing Differences
It is important to note that Western and English saddles use different measurement scales:
- English Saddles: Measured from the nail head (side of pommel) to the center of the cantle. Sizes typically range from 16″ to 19″.
- Western Saddles: Measured from the back of the swell to the front of the cantle. Western sizes are roughly 2 inches smaller than English sizes for the same rider (e.g., a 15″ Western seat is roughly equivalent to a 17″ English seat).
