SSI Income Calculator (Individual)

Estimate your potential Supplemental Security Income (SSI) payment based on your monthly income and living situation. This calculator is for an individual and uses the 2024 Federal Benefit Rate (FBR).

e.g., Social Security benefits, pensions, interest, gifts.

e.g., Wages before deductions.

Check if you receive free or reduced-cost food or shelter from someone else.

Understanding Supplemental Security Income (SSI)

Supplemental Security Income (SSI) is a federal program administered by the Social Security Administration (SSA) that provides monthly payments to adults and children with a disability or blindness who have income and resources below specific financial limits. It also provides payments to people aged 65 or older without disabilities who meet the financial limits.

Who is Eligible for SSI?

To be eligible for SSI, you must meet certain criteria:

  • Be age 65 or older, or blind, or disabled.
  • Have limited income.
  • Have limited resources (e.g., cash, bank accounts, property other than your home).
  • Be a U.S. citizen or eligible alien.
  • Reside in one of the 50 states, the District of Columbia, or the Northern Mariana Islands.

This calculator focuses on the income aspect for an individual and does not account for resource limits, marital status (deeming rules), or specific disability/blindness criteria.

How is Your SSI Payment Calculated?

The basic formula for calculating your federal SSI payment is:

Federal Benefit Rate (FBR) - Countable Income = Estimated SSI Payment

1. The Federal Benefit Rate (FBR)

The FBR is the maximum federal SSI payment an eligible individual or couple can receive. It is set by Congress and usually increases annually with cost-of-living adjustments (COLAs). For 2024, the individual FBR is $943 per month. This calculator uses this rate.

Some states also provide a state supplement to the federal SSI payment, which can vary significantly. This calculator only estimates the federal portion.

2. Countable Income

Not all of your income counts against your SSI payment. The SSA has specific rules for what income is "countable" and what is excluded. Income is generally divided into two categories:

  • Unearned Income: This includes money you receive that isn't from work. Examples are Social Security benefits, pensions, unemployment benefits, interest, dividends, gifts, and money from friends or relatives.
  • Earned Income: This is money you receive from wages, net earnings from self-employment, or other work-related activities.

3. Income Exclusions

The SSA excludes certain amounts of your income before determining your countable income. The most common exclusions are:

  • General Income Exclusion (GIE): The first $20 of most income you receive each month is not counted. This exclusion is applied first to unearned income. If you have less than $20 in unearned income, the remainder of the $20 exclusion can be applied to your earned income.
  • Earned Income Exclusion (EIE): After the GIE is applied, the first $65 of your earned income is not counted. Then, only half of the remaining earned income is counted. This is a significant exclusion designed to encourage work.

4. In-Kind Support and Maintenance (ISM)

If someone else provides you with free or reduced-cost food or shelter, this is considered In-Kind Support and Maintenance (ISM). The SSA has rules to value this support, which can reduce your SSI payment. The most common rule is the Value of One-Third Reduction (VTR). If you receive ISM, your FBR may be reduced by one-third before your countable income is subtracted. This calculator includes an option to apply the VTR.

Examples of SSI Calculation:

Example 1: Only Unearned Income

  • FBR (2024): $943
  • Monthly Unearned Income: $100 (e.g., small pension)
  • Monthly Gross Earned Income: $0
  • Receives ISM: No

Calculation:

  1. Apply GIE: $100 (unearned) – $20 (GIE) = $80 countable unearned income.
  2. Total Countable Income: $80.
  3. Estimated SSI: $943 (FBR) – $80 (countable income) = $863.00

Example 2: Only Earned Income

  • FBR (2024): $943
  • Monthly Unearned Income: $0
  • Monthly Gross Earned Income: $500 (e.g., part-time wages)
  • Receives ISM: No

Calculation:

  1. Apply GIE: $500 (earned) – $20 (GIE, since no unearned income) = $480.
  2. Apply EIE: $480 – $65 (EIE) = $415.
  3. Half of remaining earned income: $415 / 2 = $207.50 countable earned income.
  4. Total Countable Income: $207.50.
  5. Estimated SSI: $943 (FBR) – $207.50 (countable income) = $735.50

Example 3: Both Unearned and Earned Income

  • FBR (2024): $943
  • Monthly Unearned Income: $50
  • Monthly Gross Earned Income: $300
  • Receives ISM: No

Calculation:

  1. Apply GIE to unearned income first: $50 (unearned) – $20 (GIE) = $30 countable unearned income. (GIE is fully used here).
  2. Earned income after GIE: $300 (no remaining GIE to apply).
  3. Apply EIE to earned income: $300 – $65 (EIE) = $235.
  4. Half of remaining earned income: $235 / 2 = $117.50 countable earned income.
  5. Total Countable Income: $30 (unearned) + $117.50 (earned) = $147.50.
  6. Estimated SSI: $943 (FBR) – $147.50 (countable income) = $795.50

Example 4: With In-Kind Support and Maintenance (ISM)

  • FBR (2024): $943
  • Monthly Unearned Income: $0
  • Monthly Gross Earned Income: $0
  • Receives ISM: Yes (e.g., lives rent-free with a relative)

Calculation:

  1. Apply VTR: $943 (FBR) – ($943 / 3) = $943 – $314.33 = $628.67 (effective FBR).
  2. Countable Income: $0.
  3. Estimated SSI: $628.67 (effective FBR) – $0 (countable income) = $628.67

Important Considerations:

  • This calculator provides an estimate only for an individual's federal SSI payment.
  • It does not account for state SSI supplements, which vary by state.
  • It does not consider resource limits (e.g., assets like bank accounts, vehicles, property).
  • It simplifies complex rules like deeming (when the income and resources of a spouse or parent are considered).
  • Other specific exclusions (e.g., student earned income exclusion, impairment-related work expenses, blind work expenses) are not included.
  • Always consult with the Social Security Administration or a qualified professional for personalized advice regarding your SSI eligibility and payment amount.
