- Julian Date Conversion: First, the entered calendar date (Year, Month, Day) is converted into a Julian Date (JD). The Julian Date system is a continuous count of days and fractions of a day since noon Universal Time on January 1, 4713 BC. This uniform system simplifies astronomical calculations.
- Reference Point: The calculator uses a known New Moon event as a reference point (e.g., January 6, 2000, 18:14 UTC).
- Days Since Reference: It then calculates the total number of days that have passed between the reference New Moon and your specified date.
- Synodic Period: The moon's synodic period (the time it takes for the moon to complete one cycle of phases as observed from Earth) is approximately 29.530588 days. By taking the remainder of the "days since reference" divided by the synodic period, we get the moon's current age within its cycle.
