This is often the most confusing aspect for shippers. UPS doesn't just charge based on the physical weight of your package (Actual Weight). They also consider its size, which leads to the concept of Dimensional Weight.
- Actual Weight: This is the weight of your package as measured on a scale, rounded up to the next whole pound or half-pound, depending on the service.
- Dimensional Weight: This reflects the package's density. If your package is light but takes up a lot of space (e.g., a box of feathers), it will be charged based on its dimensional weight. UPS calculates dimensional weight using a formula:
(Length x Width x Height) / Dimensional Divisor. For domestic shipments within the US using inches and pounds, the common divisor is 139.
The Billable Weight is always the greater of the Actual Weight or the Dimensional Weight. This ensures that UPS is compensated fairly for the space a package occupies on their vehicles, not just its mass.
